"Three Christs" was a last minute choice of mine at the TIFF. As a big Dinklage's fan, and considering that it was a world premiere, it was easy enough to go check it out. I'm glad I did. This movie is one about the brain and its struggles, but it does so with a big heart. It's funny and touching with a good balance, and the acting is top notch (I'm actually a bigger Dinklage's fan after the movie. The underlying themes about psychiatry as science and its potential negative effect on personality, the nature of identity, the complex interaction of desire and fear are inhabiting the film and are as relevant today as they were at the time. In summary, a great entertaining movie with a deeper layer. and a stellar Dinklage.

Outdated from the offset—think Fernando Meirelles ’ “360, ” Garry Marshall ’s “New Year’s Eve” and a certain brand of early Alejandro González Iñárritu films without the miserablism —the frustratingly unrealistic “The Kindness of Strangers” from Danish writer/director Lone Scherfig exploits the aforesaid subgenre’s most testing traits, yielding a syrupy brew thick with twee and an abundance of cringe-inducing moments pulling at heartstrings. Fanciful to a fault and yet carried by an ensemble of committed performers—so purely dedicated that you end up feeling embarrassed on their behalf—Scherfig’s latest effort pursues something naively magical, only to end up with a mélange of miscalculated, cheap sentiments. Advertisement The wondrous emporium that sets the stage for our tangled souls is New York City; the town where this critic is from and therefore can confirm: we don’t quite chip in to the flow of things with an unlimited amount of selfless acts on a daily basis. But in the writer/director’s fantasy edition of the Big Apple, generosity floods through the town’s gridded bowels as amply as the East River. The main benefactor—the one that whisks us into this imaginary version of the city—is Clara ( Zoe Kazan), a horribly mistreated young mother with two sons, running away from her abusive husband who lives somewhere around Upstate, works as a cop and seems thirsty for violence. After their car gets towed—the fugitive family’s temporary accommodation till then—Clara and her good-natured pre-teen boys Jude ( Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) and Anthony ( Jack Fulton) brave it out in the cold streets of downtown Manhattan, trying out homeless shelters or wherever would accept them for the night. Thanks to her implausibly polished looks—slick dresses, freshly touched-up waves (who knows how) and elegant shoes—Clara occasionally manages to sneak into hotels and cocktail parties undetected to scavenge for scraps and crosses paths with a number of helpful yet victimized humans who also seem lost in their own ways. Among them are Andrea Riseborough ’s resolute Alice, juggling an impossible schedule both as a tireless nurse of 12-hour shifts and also as a volunteer somehow, working in support groups and soup kitchens. There is also Tahar Rahim ’s ex-convict Marc, Caleb Landry Jones ’ down-on-his-luck, hapless small-timer Jeff, and the past-his-prime Russian restaurateur Timofey ( Bill Nighy), who runs the once-upon-time-popular joint Winter Palace, an old-worldly spot where Marc works as a manager. A fantastical hub for everyone that the story touches, Winter Palace looks like the kind of place where there is an endless supply of caviar and vodka and a side of thick Russian accent 24/7. Except (and here’s the film’s biggest twist): Timofey is not even Russian. His real name is Tim and his fake accent, he believes, is supposed to create a certain intrigue to better his business. Of course, that never happens. Not that it matters in “The Kindness of Strangers, ” as Scherfig—who had previously found exceptional emotional and historical detail within the romantic and deeply feminist beats of “ An Education ” and “ Their Finest ”—doesn’t linger on anyone or anything long enough for them to grow into substantial entities. Instead, her film moves along with barely there, heartbreakingly lonesome characters spreading some good deeds while getting lost in the shuffle. We wait—and wait—to learn, for instance, why Jeff fails at everything, how Clara found herself in the midst of a nightmarish marriage and what lies beneath her husband’s (slowly revealed) psychopathic acts. Those answers never get delivered. Similarly underdeveloped elsewhere is the vague romance between Marc and Clara—the one thing that could have helped save the aimless movie that fizzles before it reaches anything halfway rewarding. While Sebastian Blenkov ’s picture-book cinematography, aided by Andrew Lockington ’s overly sentimental score, insists on a whimsical idea of human unity in New York, it’s too bad that Scherfig’s untidy narrative never connects the dots. Unfortunately at the time, Morgana's guards discovered the letter from Finna. After telling Alator she would 'find Finna ' and break her like a twig' and 'enjoy your other world' she snaps his neck using magic. Meanwhile Morgana is searching for Finna in the woods at the same time as Merlin. Merlin reaches her first and they talk, before being attacked by three of Morgana's army. Merlin is wounded, but they manage to escape to an old watch tower, where Finna completes her request and delivers Arthur's destiny to Merlin. She warns Merlin not to trust Mordred and asks that he leave her his sword, before telling him to go to the roof, for it is her that Morgana wants. As Morgana arrives, she confronts Finna and asks for Emrys' identity, but Finna uses Merlin's sword to stab herself, dying almost immediately from her wounds, leaving Morgana frustrated as she has no other way to find Emrys. Morgana then orders her men to burn Finna's body and leaves, meanwhile as Merlin is dying from his wound he speaks in dragon tongue and Kilgharrah appears from nowhere and flies him to safety and heals him. As Merlin wakes he thanks Kilgharrah for his help however also notices Kilgharrah has a wound on his wing and asks him what has happened. Kilgharrah remarks his time has come and reveals he is dying. Merlin is shocked by this and asks Kilgharrah if he will see him again, however Kilgharrah remarks when Merlin needs him he will be there for him and flies away. Merlin later on confides in Gaius and has him read the parchment Finna gave him which says that on the Great Plain of Camlann Arthur will meet his end. When we first meet them, Ruiz (Damien Bonnard) a transfer apparently from a more middle-class precinct, has joined the team, led by Chris (Alexis Manenti) a tough, no-nonsense officer of Caucasian extraction along with Gwada (Djibril Zonga) his equally hardened North African streetwise subordinate.

From the outset, Ruiz obviously is uncomfortable with Chris's willingness to skirt the law in order to bend the residents of Montfermeil to his will. Chris must deal with the "Mayor" of the neighborhood, who appears to receive bribes from local merchants in a large neighborhood flea market and acts as a quasi-mentor of the teenagers, most of whom engage in acting-out behavior. There is also Salah, a former criminal turned Iman, who provides spiritual counsel to the community but represents a more militant voice among the Muslim population, who are quite resentful of authority in general.

Ly cleverly breaks into his second act when Issa, a teenager steals a lion cub from a local circus run by a bunch of hothead gypsy racists, who drive into the projects carrying bats and threaten to attack the residents if the cub isn't returned to them immediately.

Chris and his squad break up the fight between the two groups. Ly pulls no punches in his depiction of the police officers, who engage in questionable, illegal tactics but remain devoted to resolving the burgeoning violent confrontation between the right and left wing militants. If they are unsuccessful, a full-scale riot may ensue.

Ly raises the stakes in his story when Gwada shoots Issa in the face with a flash gun after he and his pals surround the police and throw rocks at them. Meanwhile, a nerdy kid from the project has been filming the entire incident overhead with a drone and Chris races to confiscate the video card before it can be posted on the internet.

A climactic chase culminates in Chris allowing Ruiz to negotiate with Salah, who ultimately hands over the video card to ensure the riot doesn't take place. The lion cub is returned to the gypsies, but the owner of the circus punishes Issa by dragging him into a lion's cage as a warning not to steal any of their property again.

Ly's plot is clever as he both entertains and edifies, chronicling the explosive societal tensions that exist in French society today. Only the denouement, which features a riot by the teenagers as they trap the hapless three officers in the narrow confines of a hallway in one of the buildings, proves to be cinematic overkill. Ironically, it's the reasonable Ruiz, who stands pointing his firearm at Issa while he stands at the bottom of a stairwell, as the out of control teenager menacingly stands a flight above, brandishing a Molotov cocktail.

Eighty percent of the actors Ly employed here were local kids who had never acted in a film before. Ly's direction of them is masterful. At a recent Q&A, Ly confirmed that a good deal of the film's style was influenced by American films. I wouldn't be surprised if some US production houses came calling, offering loads of cash to adapt this for an English speaking audience, primarily for the US market.
